For our BYRA Cycling Action outing on Sunday 6 August, Andrew Hall will be back in Sydney, and we are fortunate that he will be down at Bayview to advise and assist us with our panning techniques. Andrew is an experienced motorsport photographer, and his work with Fuji takes him all over the world to major motoring events. He is a regular presenter at the Camera Club. After our shoot, we will meet at the Marina Café at The Quays Marina, a short walk from BYRA, for a much-needed coffee, tea or breakfast.
Where: We will be meeting at BYRA (Bayview Yacht Racing Association) at 1842 Pittwater Road, Bayview, at 7.30am. Parking is available next to the boat shed.
What to bring: On Wednesday night, Clifford White suggested a 200mm zoom. However, as we will be fairly close to the action, a wider lens is recommended for panning, e.g. up to 100mm. A 200mm+ zoom lens would be ideal for freeze action shots and getting in close to the subject.
Set your camera on Manual or Shutter Priority mode – 1/30th to 1/60th second. Vary the shutter speed, depending on your results – too slow will result in camera shake and an unclear subject.
Use a wide f/stop to blur the background – 4.5 to 5.6 is ideal. Adjust your ISO accordingly.
Set on auto focus, or for Canon users, A1 servo, to track your subject. Use centre focal point.
Remember to follow through with your camera after you have taken your shot.
Weather: Light rain, the shoot is still on. If it’s bucketing down, the shoot will be cancelled.
