How to name your photos

Image names for digital images, prints, and digital copies of prints are basically the same: The image name is a combination of
  • a prefix that you will be informed about when the event is announced.
Example: For a showcase about architecture, you might be asked to use an 'A'.
  • a title chosen by you.
    Example: 'Empire State Building NY'
  • your RSL number.
    Example: 33298
The image name then is:

          IMAGE_NAME = PREFIX_TITLE_NUMBER

In the example, the image name would be:

          A_Empire_State_Building_NY_33298

In addition:
  • Digital images should be named IMAGE_NAME.jpg, for instance A_Empire_State_Building_NY_33298.jpg.
  • For prints, the image name should be placed on the back of the print mat.
  • Image names for (optional) digital copies of prints for use on the website should be prefixed by an 'X', for instance XA_Empire_State_Building_NY_33298.jpg

Preparation of Digital Images for Projection

The following “How To’s” were prepared some time ago and provide instructions for some of the most common photo processing software.
Use these guides to correctly export your photos for submission.

  • GIMP 2.4
  • IrfanView 4.1
  • Lightroom 2
  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 2
  • Adobe Photoshop 7
  • Adobe Photoshop 8 (CS)
  • Adobe Photoshop 10 (CS3)
  • Paint Shop Pro 9
  • Workflow

Digital images

The club's projection equipment has got a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels. That means that if your photos are wider than 1,920 pixels or higher than 1,200 pixels, they will be downsized — often with mediocre results.

To do your photos justice, and in your very own interest, it is therefore important that you observe the following rules:

  • Image format: JPEG (JPG) only
  • Maximum file size: 1.5 MB
  • Maximum width: 1,920 pixels horizontally
  • Maximum height: 1,200 pixels vertically
Note that smaller images may be submitted. However, the projector will not scale (i.e. stretch) them; they will appear smaller when projected.
  • Colour space: sRGB IEC 61966 - 2.1
  • Digital images must be attached, not embedded, to an email that is sent to our email address images@dyrslcameraclub.org.au no later than midnight on the Sunday prior to the meeting.

Please check all image sizes before submission; images with sizes greater than detailed above will be rejected.

Find more information in the section Preparation of Digital Images for Projection on the right.
