Ferrython

Sunday 27 August 2017
After an absence of a couple of years, the club’s Ferrython makes a reappearance on our schedule on Sunday 27 August.  There is no racing between ferries involved, but the intention is to have a social event where we ride as many ferries as possible on the day - in this case six - and take the opportunity to photograph not just the beauty of our harbour but also a bit of harbour-side life on a Sunday.

Details of the program for the day can be found below. It is an easy day with a little bit of walking but nothing particularly strenuous.

It is a full day outing starting and ending at Manly Wharf, so members are reminded that all-day parking in Manly on a Sunday is difficult and using public transport or being dropped off is probably a good idea. Anyone who prefers to join the group at Circular Quay should make sure they are there before 10 am at the very latest.

There is no cost associated with the outing except a ferry fare and your own lunch. Use your Opal card to ride the ferries all day for a flat charge of $2.60 ($2.50 for seniors and pensioners).

Unless the weather is particularly nasty, we expect that the outing will go ahead, potentially giving us an opportunity to experience photography in whatever conditions may prevail. There are numerous websites with good info on photography in the rain for those who need it. For instance, check out https://contrastly.com/rain/.

Program

09:00
Meet at Manly wharf. Note it can be hard and/or expensive to find all-day parking in Manly on a Sunday, so public transport or a drop-off might be a good idea. Anyone who prefers to train or bus it into Circular Quay should meet up with the group at wharf 5 not later than 10am.

09:20
Manly ferry leaves for Circular Quay. ETA 09:50 Circular Quay.

10:05
Leaving from wharf 5, catch the Darling Harbour Ferry to Jeffrey Street wharf (this is the wharf next to Milsons Point, which is closed due to upgrades). ETA 10:15 Jeffrey Street.

10:15 to 12:00
Check out the many aspects of the waterfront and harbour under and around the bridge, Luna Park, Lavender Bay and Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden. Explore the charming and peaceful garden and sculptures before another 10 minute stroll up the hill to Blues Point Road for lunch at the Commodore Hotel.

12:00 to 13:00
Lunch at the Commodore Hotel bistro. Bistro opens from 11:30 and arrangements will be made to pre-order meals to expedite the process on what will probably be a busy time at the pub. Check the out menu (Adobe PDF file).

13:00
Leave to catch the ferry at McMahons Point. It's only a 10 minute stroll but you need to take time to check out the street scenes on Blues Point Road and the charming colonial architecture on the way down the hill and the harbour views at the bottom.

13:25
Ferry to Circular Quay. ETA 13:34 Circular Quay.

14:00
Catch ferry to Cremorne Point. ETA 14:10 Cremorne Point

14:10 to 15:27
Walk the foreshores of Cremorne Point, Robertson's Point and the lighthouse, and pathway up to Old Cremorne Wharf. Easy walking path of about 900 metres through beautifully manicured gardens, great architecture and lovely harbour views. 10 minute side trip from the main path to the lighthouse.

15:27
Ferry from Old Cremorne wharf to Circular Quay via South Mosman and Cremorne Point. Early birds who make it to the wharf by 15:18 can catch a bonus ferry ride to Mosman Bay on the same ferry that returns to pick up the rest of us at Old Cremorne. ETA 15:45 Circular Quay

16:00
Catch ferry to Manly from Wharf 3. ETA 16:30 Manly.
